Dr. Penny Lenihan
Senior Gender Specialist and Consultant Psychologist
BSc(Hons). MSc. DPsych. Couns. CPsychol. AFBPSs. HCPC Registered
Dr Penny Lenihan is one of the UK’s leading experts in the field of gender dysphoria and gender related care, a senior consultant psychologist, a BPS Chartered Counselling Psychologist and an HCPC Registered Doctor of Counselling Psychology, Practitioner Psychologist and Counselling Psychologist. She has worked in the NHS, the third sector and in academia, including leading medical schools. She has been widely published in peer reviewed journals, books, professional conferences and a contributory author to key professional clinical guidelines in relation to gender and sexualities. Dr Lenihan was Head of Psychology/Lead Consultant Psychologist at Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic for over 15 years, as well providing independent clinical care and training for over 25 years. She now works full time in the independent sector, but continues to provide consultation, supervision and training within the NHS by arrangement. She is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a member of British Association of Gender Specialists (BAGIS), the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), the European Association of Transgender Health (EPATH) and GenderCare. She is included on the HM Government Gender Recognition Panel’s list of specialists in the field of gender dysphoria.
Dr Lenihan provides specialist psychological assessments and follow-up sessions including reviews for endorsement of hormone therapy, reviews for endorsement of all types of gender surgeries, psychotherapy and specialist reports for legal gender recognition applications. She also has a specialist interest in autism and is a professional member of the National Autism Society. She aims to deliver a professional, but also individually focused service, with a view to clients feeling well supported, fully involved and informed, throughout all aspects of their care. If Dr Lenihan endorses clients for hormone therapy, then they will be referred for an appointment on site with our skilled experienced medical team, to review physical health and starting the endocrine treatment. Blood tests are ideally done prior to the medical appointment, organised by clients with their GPs. Assuming no medical contraindications hormone therapy can then be initiated through private prescription or GP prescription, depending on whether the patient’s GP is amenable to prescribing at that stage. Some GPs are more comfortable continuing rather than initiating a prescription in relation to private treatment. In cases of medical contraindications/complexity, then a referral may be made to a Consultant Endocrinologist. For surgical referrals, a referral letter and a copy of the consultation report will be sent to the client’s selected surgeon. On site consultations can be arranged for most types of gender surgeries. As an adult gender specialist, Dr Lenihan does not see clients under the age of 18 and only a limited number of 18-21 year olds.
Penny has also recently published a book for practitioners working with issues surrounding gender identity, this book provides the additional tools and insights needed to help them build a therapeutic relationship with their client. Including case studies, interactive exercises and suggested reading lists, it forms a practical toolbox that any counsellor of gender issues can utilise. You can find the link to the book here.
