Dr. Vickie Pasterski Gender Identity Specialist
Dr. Vickie Pasterski has more than 20 years of experience in the field of gender development, beginning with an MA in Counselling Psychology at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. While at LMU, she specialised in neuropsychological assessment methods and conducted research looking at gender-related neurocognitive functioning.
In 1998, Vickie moved to the UK to study for a PhD with the Behavioural Neuroendocrinology Laboratory, Department of Psychology, City University, London. Her doctoral research focussed on relative influences of foetal androgen exposure and parental socialisation in the development of gender-related behaviour. Also, as part of her doctoral training, Vickie worked alongside specialists in Paediatric Endocrinology/Urology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, monitoring gender-related development in individuals diagnosed with a disorder of sex development (DSD, or Intersex).
In 2002, Vickie became a Postdoctoral Fellow jointly with Columbia University Medical Center and New York State Psychiatric Institute. There she undertook two years of further specialist training in the diagnosis and clinical management of gender dysphoria in patients attending the Psychoendocrine Clinic within the Psychiatric Institute.>
From 2008 to 2016, Vickie worked as a Clinical Research Psychologist in Paediatric Endocrinology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University NHS Trust. There she was a primary contributing member of a multidisciplinary team charged with diagnosis and clinical management of DSD. Also since 2008, Vickie has maintained a private clinical practice, diagnosing gender dysphoria and providing referrals for gender affirming medical interventions. She is recognized by the UK Ministry of Justice as a Gender Specialist, providing reports for Gender Recognition Certificate applicants. She has helped more than 500 individuals transition and maintains working relationships with surgeons and gender specialists in Europe, North America, and Asia.
In the years since finishing her training, Vickie has been invited as Visiting Lecturer to teach undergraduate courses in Clinical Psychopathology, Abnormal Psychology, and Psychobiology of Gender Development, in the USA (University of Georgia) and UK (Warwick University). She has contributed as Guest Lecturer at King’s College, London, Warwick University Medical School, and University of Cambridge. Vickie currently continues in her post as Affiliated Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, University of Cambridge.
Vickie has published more than two dozen peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals including Nature Reviews Endocrinology, Lancet, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, Hormones and Behavior, and Psychoneuroendocrinology. She has authored chapters for textbooks in Endocrinology, Psychology, and Law. Vickie is a member of the Editorial Board for Archives of Sexual Behavior, has served as Guest Editor for Journal of Pediatric Psychology, and is a Reviewer for numerous journals, including AIMS Genetics, Journal of Sexual Medicine, Cognitive Science, and Behavior Research Methods. She has served as External Examiner for PhD degree candidates at the University of Cambridge, Erasmus University, and University of Ghent; and has been invited to speak about her research and experience in more than 20 cities in a dozen countries around the world.
