Dr Debby Jackson Chartered Clinical Psychologist
Dr Debby Jackson is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, and Gender Diversity Specialist based in Exeter in the South West of England.
Dr Jackson obtained her undergraduate Psychology Degree in 1998 in her hometown of Sheffield and then moved to London where she gained clinical and research experience working in in-patient and community settings and across the age range in a variety of fields including Mental Health, Eating Disorders, Psychosis, Substance Misuse, Learning Disabilities, and Youth Offending. During her doctoral training, she developed specialist knowledge, and skills in cognitive and systemic therapies and in working with young people and their families experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
After obtained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from University College London in 2006, Dr Jackson moved with her partner to the West Country. Initially working with Devon Primary Care Trust, she developed a programme with local stakeholders that aimed to reduce racial and ethnic inequalities in mental health in the region. In 2008 she went on to support the delivery of adult mental health services in Cornwall and early intervention psychosis services in Devon and was part of the development and leadership team for the βImproving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT)β initiative that saw the establishment of primary care (GP) based psychological therapy services in Devon and across the UK.
In 2015 Dr Jackson obtained a role at the West of England Specialist Gender Identity Clinic in Exeter, provide by Devon Partnership NHS Trust. In this role, she provided specialist assessments and psychological support, as part of a multi-disciplinary team to patients experiencing gender dysphoria. She led the psychology and psychological therapy team in the clinic and provided gender specialist support, consultation, supervision and training to students and professionals in a range of settings. She also established links with the University of Exeter and a team with a special interest in research in the field. As part of the leadership team, she contributed, most recently, to large scale service development plans aimed at improving access to gender identity healthcare and support in the South West. She is hopeful that these developments will result in the establishment of services that in time will meet the needs of the regional population.
In 2021, in response to a need to better balance work and home life, she moved into independent practice providing specialist assessment and support to trans, non-binary and gender diverse adults who are considering, or have decided that they wish to pursue, gender identity healthcare interventions. She works closely with other independent gender specialist nationally including those providing psychological, voice and communication, endocrine and surgical interventions. She continues to support her colleagues in the NHS and provide services to the clinic in Exeter.
Dr Jackson is a full member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health and the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists and is included in the HM Court and Tribunal Servicesβ List of Specialists in the Field of Gender Dysphoria.
